Who scored, Bruno Fernandes or Cristiano Ronaldo?

Bruno Fernandes agreed with Cristiano Ronaldo’s claim that he scored the first goal in Portugal’s 2-0 World Cup win over Uruguay. However, he said that he thought his Manchester United teammate had scored the first goal at Lusail Stadium by heading his cross.

In Qatar 2022, Portugal became the third country, after France and Brazil, to clinch a spot in the round of 16 after making it two victories out of two in Group H by overcoming a dismal Uruguay team. France and Brazil were the first two nations to do so.

The identity of the player who scored Portugal’s first goal in the match is still a mystery, as both Fernandes and coach Fernando Santos are reluctant to say for certain whether or not Cristiano Ronaldo gave the game-winning finishing touch.

Did Cristiano get a touch of the ball?

At first glance, it seemed like Ronaldo had guided Fernandes’ cross into the back of the goal with a little touch of his head in the 54th minute; however, television replays revealed that the 37-year-old had no contact with the ball.

Despite Ronaldo celebrating, believing the goal was his, Fernandes was declared as the goalscorer on the large screen inside the stadium. If the goal had been Ronaldo’s, it would have tied him with legendary former striker Eusebio for ninth place on Portugal’s all-time list of World Cup goals scored.

But when he was asked about the goal after being named Player of the Match, Fernandes revealed that he himself didn’t know who scored it.
