What is Morocco’s best result in a World Cup?

It felt like the highest jump in the history of the world. En-Nesyri could have risen over Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya and all of the HIyaz Mountains to put the ball in the back of the net for African and Arab football. Morocco, the country that made people smile from Senegal to Saudi Arabia, made it to the World Cup semi-finals, Portugal the next team to suffer at the hands of Walid Regragui’s heroic side after Spain were defeated on penalties.

The Morocco manager, before the game, said that it was upon his team to show the rest of the world that they, and Arab football as a whole, were ready to be considered among the rest. “Today, Africa is front and centre”, he said.

What is Morocco’s best result at the World Cup?

Qatar 2022 is only Morocco’s sixth World Cup appearance, and finishing within the top four teams is obviously their best result. In previous editions, the furthest they had gone was to the Round of 16, at the Mexico 1986 tournament.

They drew 0-0 with Poland and England before beating, ahem, Portugal 3-1 in the final group game to progress to the knockout round. There they came up against West Germany and lost 1-0, with a goal from Lothar Matthäus in the 89th minute.

This was the only other time, along with 2022, when the African side had managed to navigate the group stages, and is the best result for an African side in World Cup history.

1970: First African team to earn a point
1986: First African team to reach the knockouts
2022: First African team to reach the semifinals
