Steelers clear major cap room with glaringly obvious cut

The Pittsburgh Steelers, looking to build around young quarterback Kenny Pickett, freed up much-needed cover space with a clear cut.

The Pittsburgh Steelers had long odds of reaching the playoffs last season, but they almost made it. They finished the year with a 9-8 record, and saw flashes of greatness from quarterback Kenny Pickett. They have some areas on the team that still need to be addressed. To do this, they must have as much cap area as possible.

They made the easy decision to free up some money.

According to Jordan Schultz of theScore, the Steelers are releasing cornerback William Jackson III. This decision by Pittsburgh freed up $12.2 million in cap space.

#Steelers notified CB William Jackson that he will be released, providing $12 million in max space, according to Schultz_Report. Jackson did not play for Pittsburgh after he was acquired before the trade deadline.

The Steelers cut CB William Jackson III, freeing up $12.2 million in cap space

Last season, Pittsburgh acquired Jackson in a trade with the Washington Chiefs before a deadline. The Steelers sent over 2,025 conditional draft picks in the sixth round, but Jackson did not play a single game with the team. This is partly due to a cornerback injury this season.

Jackson, a former 2016 first-round pick by the Cincinnati Bengals, has played in just four games with the Leaders in 2022, recording 16 tackles (15 solo, one assisted) and two passes defensed. In coverage, Jackson allowed 17 receptions for 190 yards and two touchdowns on 24 targets, according to Pro Football Reference.

Is the Steelers’ Sixth Round Pick Given to Leaders in 2025? He will stay in Pittsburgh because Jackson did not play.

This was an important move the Steelers made to free up cap space. Let’s not forget, the free agency negotiation window opens on March 13th, with the league’s 2023 year officially beginning on March 15th. Just days before these key dates, Pittsburgh freed up $12.2 million in max space to make a few moves.
