NFL rumors: Josh McDaniels might’ve cost Raiders Darren Waller for a ridiculous reason

According to an NFL insider, Darren Waller was upset with Las Vegas Raiders coach Josh McDaniels.

In a shocking move, the Las Vegas Raiders traded Pro Bowl tight end Darren Waller to the New York Giants in the third round.

Waller is one of the best tight ends in the NFL. Since 2019, he’s third on the receiving list among tight ends (3,394), trailing only Travis Kelsey and Mark Andrews.

It’s a crushing loss for the Raiders offense. Newly acquired quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has targeted tight ends throughout his career. Last season, he was the 49ers’ first starter from Week 3 through Week 12. During that span, the 49ers ranked ninth in the league in tight end goals per game (5.7). Therefore, Waller is expected to be the ideal target for the veteran midfielder.

Furthermore, the third-round pick was an underwhelming return for a player of Waller’s caliber.

So why didn’t the raiders stick with him?

After the trade, The Athletic’s Vic Tavor reported some interesting news.

Waller and Las Vegas ace Kelsey Bloom recently got married. The wedding took place on March 4th. However, Raiders coach Josh McDaniels leaked the wedding news before the couple made the announcement. This led to Waller being “annoyed” by McDaniels, according to Tavor:

The trade comes 10 days after Darren Waller’s wedding to Aces goalkeeper Kelsey Bloom. The timing is only interesting because Josh McDaniels accidentally leaked the news of his wedding to reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine. Waller was upset with the McDaniels when the Las Vegas Review-Journal ran a story announcing that the wedding was scheduled for later in the week. The couple has not publicly announced their plans to marry.

It has not been confirmed that the incident was directly related to Waller’s departure, but the timing of the report and the incident are noteworthy.
