The Chicago Bears added depth to their offense by poaching a member of the Green Bay Packers.

There was a time when the Green Bay Packers used to take players from the Chicago Bears and enjoy doing so. It looks like the tables may have turned.

On Thursday, the Bears signed a one-year deal with former Green Bay quarterback Robert Tonian. It’s not a flashy move, but it helps Justin Fields.

It’s not like Tonian is Travis Kelsey. Let’s make that 100% clear. In five seasons, Tonian barely received more than 1,300 yards. But he has 16 touchdowns, which means he loves to score, and that’s what Chicago needs at this point. Plus, they have no choice but to give Fields some help figuring out what he could be.

Robert Tonian provides experience passing for the Chicago Bears and assists Justin Fields.

At this point, it appears as though the Bears are only looking to a second or third wave of free agency to find depth for their roster, knowing that the draft will also play a prominent role in making that team. Robert Tonian’s signature is a prime example of this.

With signings like Nate Davis and Tremaine Edmunds and trading with DJ Moore, Chicago has already established itself on the first wave. However, General Manager Ryan Pauls has made it clear that he wants to build his team through the draft and is willing to trade the draft multiple times for picks not only in 2023 but in 2024 as well.

Robert Tonian won’t have a break season, but don’t think he won’t be able to provide input on Green Bay, at least while also giving Fields another possible throwing football option in case Cole Kmet finds himself covered hard. Defenders opposition. It’s a move that only has rewards.
