NFL rumors: Baker Mayfield drawing shockingly heavy interest already

While other quarterbacks dominate the offseason conversation, Baker Mayfield may be a surprisingly desirable commodity based on the early market.

If you look at NFL rumors regarding quarterbacks, you’ll likely see a lot about Aaron Rodgers, Lamar Jackson, and even Monday’s Saints signing Derek Carr, too. Even among other free agents, we’ve seen a lot about the likes of Jimmy Garoppolo. But little was said about Baker Mayfield.

This may not be the case in the league when it comes to front offices.

On Monday, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that the Los Angeles Rams have a real interest in bringing Mayfield back after signing him during the 2022 season following his release from Carolina. The Rams aren’t alone, though, as the San Francisco 49ers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have also expressed interest in the former No. 1 overall pick.

I understand the #Rams would like to keep Baker Mayfield, but they’ll have competition. #49ers like Mayfield and #Bucs are sleeping. I expected it to reach a figure of about $8 million. pic.twitter.com/YfaLWc4jZx

NFL Rumors: Baker Mayfield has already attracted the interest of 3 teams

Mayfield has seen a huge run for his star success over the past few years. After helping guide the Cleveland Browns to the playoffs, he seemed to be on the upswing on his way to being a savior in a football-mad city. Instead, things soured dramatically, setting the stage for his exit and eventual trade to the Panthers.

Whether it was Matt Rowley, who was eventually fired, or Mayfield, things just didn’t work out for Carolina at all. A quarterback was released and eventually fell in with the Rams as they tried to navigate an injury to Matthew Stafford.

Although Mayfield didn’t turn around the season in Los Angeles, he did help stabilize the position amid injuries, and more importantly, he was praised by coaches and teammates alike for his leadership and professionalism, especially given his unique situation.

As for the teams involved, knowing the Rams makes sense why they’d want the former first baseman back to back up Stafford or compete for the first job. Meanwhile, he can run deep for the 49ers and may be a favorite to start when he battles with Kyle Trask in Tampa.

Anyway, while we haven’t talked much about Baker Mayfield, the difference is definitely the name to watch out there.
