Giants are about to talk themselves into worst QB contract of all time

The New York Giants are about to sign up for one of the worst contracts, if not the worst, in NFL history.
Daniel Jones audaciously demanded no less than $45 million this season. At first we laughed. Then, after a while, the New York Giants looked around the room and thought about alternatives, and said, “You know what, we’re going to have a picnic in that park.”
The Giants are up against it because two talented young players are about to go to free agency if they do nothing: Jones and running back Saquon Barkley. If the Giants can’t agree to an extension with Jones, they’ll have to tag him in, which means Barkley will likely be priced out of New York.
But if they can agree on this extension, they can tag Barkley and keep the gang together. This factor could make Jones a significantly rich man.
According to Albert Brier of Sports Illustrated, Jones and the Giants are moving forward in contract talks.
Giants representatives and Daniel Jones’ representatives continue discussions in Jersey regarding a long-term deal. It may come down to the wire. Earlier today, the team was starting to get its ground, I’m told, after putting up a financial suite. We’ll see if they find common ground.
The tag deadline is 4 p.m. ET.

While the team is starting to stand its ground, the fact that they’re even talking at the range Jones is looking for is downright ridiculous.
Daniel Jones is about to make like a Bandit with the New York Giants
If Jones made $45 million a year, he would be making as much money as Patrick Mahomes and more than Josh Allen on an average annual value basis.
Remember, Jones won the Giants by a single playoff aggregate. and the Giants in the NFC East, which includes Jalen Hurts and Dak Prescott.
Jones proved he was more capable than the NFL world once thought last year by dragging a relatively mediocre offense out of Barkley into the playoffs and through the divisional round. But does that alone make him worth $45 million?
This is the cost you pay when you don’t want to go back to the drawing board in the middle. Perhaps the Giants should tag Jones, but Barkley’s situation puts them in a bind.
The ultimate deal-killer that lets us know if it’s good or bad will be its length and how stimulating it is. If the contract sounds like Geno Smith’s self-gambling contract, then it probably works for New York. But if large portions of the big number are guaranteed and it’s $40+ million, then we have to wonder if this is the most lucrative QB contract in NFL history.
If he makes it to $45 million, he rivals Russell Wilson, who averages $49 million a year in Denver and is pretty much guaranteed. And look how good that has been for the Broncos.
It’s understandable that the Giants have to do this, but the fact that Jones has held the franchise hostage for that much money is amazing.
