NFL Rumors: Why the Bears Traded No. 1 Before Free Agency Revealed
Wide receiver DJ Moore sent out a related tweet when news broke of the Panthers including their trade to the Bears for the #1 draft pick.
The Panthers took a big swing to find the franchise’s quarterback by trading with the Bears for the #1 pick in the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft. They had to give up their best wide receiver to do so.
DJ Moore was included in the trade package that put Carolina at the top of the draft order, and his inclusion is apparently key to getting the deal now done. It’s not clear if he figured it out with the rest of us or had foreknowledge, but his reaction to the trade was creative either way.
The wide receiver dropped two shocked facial emojis and left it at that.
DJ Moore should be a major addition in the Bears Panthers trade
Moore may have been surprised by the move, but it’s a move that should work in his favour. Carolina’s offense didn’t give him enough opportunities to shine, even as he caught 63 passes for 888 yards and seven touchdowns to lead the team in receiving.
Now, rather than tackle a rookie quarterback, Moore will be tasked with helping unlock all of Justin Fields’ potential along with receivers like Darnell Mooney and Chase Claypool.
For the Bears, he’s a major immediate receiver with a solid history of productivity at almost 26 years old.
The former first-round pick racked up 788 yards as a junior in 2018, and then went on to post three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons for the Panthers despite the quarterback’s instability. He went from catching passes from Cam Newton to Kyle Allen to Teddy Bridgewater to Sam Darnold to Baker Mayfield and is still consistently performing.
As for the Panthers, they’ll need to hope that giving up Moore doesn’t backfire on them. Many in the NFL World question them on that front. Being a franchise quarterback is the final positive, but this passer won’t have a quality wide receiver for Moore to rely on at the start.
