Derek Carr changes his mind at the last minute with NFL free agency decision

Not so fast with the Derek Carr to New York Jets rumors. A recent report has Carr making his 180 and returning to the team he’s been interested in since the start of the offseason – the New Orleans Saints.

Freeback quarterback Derek Carr appears to have made up his mind about his future and is close to a deal with the New Orleans Saints this offseason.

As ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported, the Saints have emerged as favorites to sign Carr, and a deal could be sealed by the end of the day. It’s an exciting move that will send Carr to the Big Easy and help former Las Vegas Raiders coach Dennis Allen rebuild the Saints in the post-Sean Payton era, leaving the New York Jets to find another quarterback.

NOLA has been shooting for Carr for several months now and they were the only team to finalize a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders before Carr became a free agent. After hosting Carr for several visits, Carr decided to test out for free agency and seemed smitten with the New York Jets who treated Carr with plenty of compliments, even telling him he could be a first ballot Hall-of-Famer if he joined the franchise.

Sweet Things Whisper New York didn’t translate into, well, nothing. Carr appears set to join New Orleans for 2023 with a deal that is presumably going through as we speak.

Derek Carr is pulling a U-turn and working towards a deal with the New Orleans Saints

Formerly the team most popular for Carr touchdowns, the Jets have received a cautious vote of confidence from several NFL pundits in recent weeks. It turns out that it was all speculation as Carr was reportedly headed to NOLA instead.

A day earlier, NOLA cleared enough space to fit Carr by restructuring the contracts of Demario Davis and Taysom Hill. Mickey Loomis and the Saints front desk are known for frequently reworking contracts to navigate the franchise through capspace hell, and they’ve somehow done it again and are ready to absorb Carr’s blow in 2023.

The exact details of Carr’s contracts have yet to be released, though one can imagine the Saints are happy to secure the needed quarterback without having to give up any commercial compensation.

Carr would be reunited with Dennis Allen, the coach who drafted him, and help the Saints become top contenders again.
