Cowboys plan to replace Dalton Schultz has been telegraphed

The Dallas Cowboys used their franchise tag to bring back Tony Pollard, making it look like Dalton Schultz is on his way out the door. Who can replace him?

One of Dak Prescott’s favorite weapons may be on his way out of Dallas.

Dalton Schultz wasn’t worth the franchise’s price tag, and the Cowboys preferred using him over Tony Pollard, anyway. Now, Schultz will likely be a free agent unless Dallas agrees to a long-term extension with him.

ESPN’s Dan Graziano reported the other day that Dallas would likely use the franchise tag on Pollard, which means Schultz will need to find a home elsewhere. Schultz was a Cowboys starter last season.

Schultz is a former fourth-round draft pick for Dallas and had 577 yards and five touchdowns last year.

How will the Dallas Cowboys replace Dalton Schultz?

The Cowboys’ best bet in replacing Schultz, who doubled as a standout blocker, would be to do so in the NFL Draft. As it just so happens, this year’s draft class is headlined by some elite tight end offerings. Dalton Kincaid, Darnell Washington, and Meyer Meyer are arguably the best trio, but there’s a lot more worth crafting early on.

Several mock NFL draft picks have Dallas related to Kincaid, suggesting the team would take a tight end early on to replace a valuable player on their offense like Schultz. Was that evident at the NFL Combine?

The tight end in Dallas has been the definition of stability since the days of Jason Witten. Kincaid could be the next member of that fraternity, as he led the Utah Utes to a Pac-12 championship, gaining 890 yards on 70 receptions. Utah went to the Rose Bowl last season.

This is the kind of production most teams would expect from Kincaid at the NFL level, including the Cowboys if they’re very lucky.
