Cowboys lose out on Ezekiel Elliott replacement on affordable deal

The Dallas Cowboys released running back Ezekiel Elliott earlier this week, and they may have lost their potential replacement.

The Dallas Cowboys have a bit of a spin on their roster, especially on the offensive side of the line of scrimmage. At the start of the league year 2023, they announced that they would release Ezequiel Elliott from his contract, making him a free agent.

Given the massive cap Elliott carried, it would have been easy for the Cowboys to take it on paper. But who will replace him on the list?

Well, one option is off the board.

According to ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter, the former Chicago Bears Carolina Panthers have signed D’Onta Foreman to a one-year, $3 million contract.

Cowboys lose prospect to replace Ezekiel Elliott

Furman is coming out of his career with the Panthers, especially after the team traded Christian McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers midseason. In 17 games played (nine), Furman ran for 914 yards and five touchdowns on 203 carries, all career highs.

The Panthers are undergoing an overhaul with new head coach Frank Reich. Again on February 23, Carolina running backs coach Dos Staley said he would like to bring Furman back, but said it wasn’t his call.

The Panthers pivoted to bringing their best working free agent back in Miles Sanders. A day later, Foreman decides to sign with the Bears, where he meets former Panthers teammates DJ Moore and PJ Walker.

As for the Cowboys, it is unknown how they will fill the void left by Elliott. They put the franchise’s tag on Tony Pollard, who would take over the starting role. In terms of free agents, the best options out there are Damien Harris and Devin Singletary. There is also an option to search for options in the NFL Draft, with the biggest name for the class being Texas Longhorns star Bijan Robinson.

The league year has just begun, so there is plenty of time to see how the Cowboys will handle the running back position.
