Aaron Rodgers cap hit if traded isn’t as bad as you think

If Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is traded, his new team won’t be dealing with a huge cap for the 2023 season.

There appears to be movement on the Aaron Rodgers front. Since the Green Bay Packers’ season ended, he’s been reflecting on his decision. This week, the New York Jets received permission to talk to Rodgers, which they did with a visit to California. Then, on Thursday, ESPN’s Diana Rossini reported that the Jets are confident they will acquire Rodgers.

When looking at Rodgers’ current contract structure, it’s set to account for $31.62 million against the 2023 cap, according to Spottrack. But for those who think the planes will pick up this cap, that won’t actually be the case.

TheMMQB’s Albert Brier wrote on Twitter that the team that acquires Rodgers in a deal, no matter what, will only get $15.74 million.

So, for 2023, Rodgers wouldn’t be as successful if he was traded to a new team. But what about the coming years?

Spottrack’s Michael Genetti tweeted a cap on Rodgers if he’s on a new team, assuming the salary isn’t kept. Rodgers will carry a cap of $32.5 million in 2024, a cap of $51.1 million in 2025, and a cap of $45.2 million in 2026. But, Ginetti points out, if this is a “done situation,” the new team will pay $59.15 million in 2023, addressing $43.725 million in dead cap.

It appears that as of this writing, the Packers are moving on from Rodgers to begin the era of love for Jordan. After all, Love was their first-round pick for 2020, and the team has until May 1 to pick a fifth-year pick for the 2024 season. With that, the Jets are the only team given permission to talk to Rodgers. With players flirting with Rodgers on social media, and the aforementioned report of the Jets feeling confident about his acquisition, all eyes are on the AFC East team.

The league year officially begins March 15, and NFL fans will be wondering about Rodgers’ decision regarding his placement for the 2023 season. Will he agree to be traded to a new team? Or will he retire?
