2023 NFL Draft compensatory picks announced: 49ers clean up

Of the 37 NFL 2023 offset picks announced by the league, the San Francisco 49ers have come through in a huge way.

The recent success of the San Francisco 49ers can be attributed to their ability to scout talent in college, get selected in the NFL Draft, and develop them into legitimate rookies at the professional level. As a result of their talent, coaching, and drafting, they have reached the NFC Championship Game three times in the past four years. Ahead of the 2023 NFL Draft, the 49ers got more picks to draw on in the three-day event from April 27-29.

On Thursday, the NFL officially announced the compensatory picks awarded to eligible teams. Of the 37 picks rewarded, the 49ers have cleaned up seven, including three third-round picks. These three rounds were awarded at the league’s initiative for teams to develop minority candidates into future head coaches and general managers for new teams.

How were compensatory third-round picks determined:

Cardinals: Christian Kirk
Leaders: Brandon Scherff
Brown: Kwesi Adofu-Mensah
49 Q: Robert Saleh / Martin Mayhew
Presidents: Ryan Pauls
49ers: Mike McDaniel
49ers: DeMeco Ryans / Ran Carthon

The 49ers clean up the NFL’s top picks with seven draft picks

The 49ers’ third-round picks are numbers 99, 101, and 102. These picks were obtained after Robert Saleh was hired as the head coach of the New York Jets in 2021, and Martin Mayhew was named general manager of the Washington Leaders in 2021. Mike McDaniel became the manager of the year for the Miami Dolphins in 2022, DeMeco Ryans was named head coach of the Houston Texans in 2023, and Ran Karthon became the general manager of the Tennessee Titans in 2023.

They were given San Francisco’s other four draft picks after their net loss to eligible free agents last season. As ESPN’s Nick Wagner points out, the 49ers acquired cornerback Charvarius Ward, but lost running backs Raheem Mostert, offensive guard Laken Tomlinson, cornerback K’Wuan Williams, and defensive linemen Arden Key and DJ Jones last season.

Here are the official compensatory picks earned by the 49ers:

Third round: Choices 99, 101, and 102Fifth round: Choose 173Sixth round: Choose 216Seventh round: Picks 253, 255

The Los Angeles Rams were the team with the second most compensatory snaps awarded to them, with four. The Arizona Cardinals, Dallas Cowboys, and Kansas City Chiefs are all tied for the third-most compensating draft picks awarded with three.

With seven new compensatory picks, the 49ers will have 11 draft picks at their disposal throughout the three days of the 2023 NFL Draft.
